Dr. Shawn J. Loder is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with fellowship training in hand surgery and a clinical focus on extremity reconstruction.
Dr. Loder’s academic interests bridge reconstructive surgery and regenerative medicine, with particular emphasis on stem cell-based therapies, soft-tissue reconstruction, wound healing, and the biological response to trauma. His work seeks to translate laboratory approaches into practical strategies for restoration of injured and deficient tissues.
Education and Training
Dr. Loder received his undergraduate degree in biology from Dartmouth College and earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he additionally served as Academic Chief Resident. He subsequently completed fellowship training in hand surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His research training has included two separate two-year research fellowships supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, with work spanning traumatic injury, heterotopic ossification, wound healing, adipose biology, and regenerative medicine.
Research and Academic Interests
Dr. Loder conducts translational research focused on tissue repair and regeneration following trauma. His overarching interest in inducible epimorphic and morphallactic regeneration. His work at the University of Pittsburgh has centered on adipose biology, adipose-derived stem cells, fat grafting, nanofat, cryopreservation, wound healing, and reconstruction following burns and complex soft-tissue injury. He has contributed to multiple federally and institutionally funded programs evaluating adipose-based therapies for traumatic skin injury, craniofacial soft-tissue reconstruction, extremity reconstruction, adhesion prevention, and chronic wounds. His broader research has also examined post-traumatic inflammation, fibrosis, heterotopic ossification, and tissue regeneration.

Dr. Loder has received numerous awards for research, clinical education, and academic achievement. These include the UPMC Plastic Surgery Resident Teaching Award, Department of Plastic Surgery SOUL and Heart Awards, multiple Best Presentation Awards at Plastic Surgery the Meeting, the J.K. Hardesty, MD Best Poster Award from the Plastic Surgery Research Council, and research support through the NIH Loan Repayment Program and Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
Earlier in his career, he received Howard Hughes Medical Institute research fellowships and graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School with Distinction in Research.
Professional Leadership and Affiliations
Dr. Loder has served on the Plastic Surgery Foundation Basic Science Grant Review Committee and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Regenerative Medicine Subcommittee. His academic work focuses on integrating reconstructive surgery with translational approaches to tissue regeneration.
